Manhood has cut down more than half of the Earth’s forests... About Programme
The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (the GEF SGP) started its activity in 1992 and presently is being implemented in 101 countries around the globe. In Uzbekistan GEF SGP commenced its activity since the beginning of the current year only.
The programme’s title speaks for itself. The key words of the programme’s title are:
- Grant – the programme provides grants, that is gratis financial support;
- Small grant – the programme provides small grants, thus, it is oriented towards NOT full-scale projects and programs implemented by the government, but towards local initiatives of people residing in certain area. The maximum amount of grant is USD 50,000;
- Global Environment Facility – while the initiatives are local, they must result in global benefits. Besides, these benefits shall be pointed at natural environment improvement. Although local initiatives may seem to be very limited in scale, they can easily result in global ecological benefits – for instance, preservation of any biological species is beneficial for the entire global ecosystem; prevention of greenhouse gases emission is good for the entire planet; prevention of desertification and healthy soils conservation is globally important as it decreases pressure on other lands, etc. It is because all these thematic areas are of global significance, did they become the subject of international conventions and GEF activities.
We have formulated the goal of the GEF SGP as follows:
To promote the improvement of global natural environment via implementation, by means of local people, of local initiatives designated to preserve and restore the environment by implementing and replicating sustainable natural resources management practices that improve people’s livelihoods.
A world-famous phrase is chosen to serve as the GEF SGP motto in our country –
THINK GLOBALLY – SAVE LOCALLY
